A few tips for making your morning quiet time a reality. Whether it’s a few minutes or an hour, having some quiet time sets the tone for the rest of the day.
Just the other day, my seven-year-old was flipping through the calendar, counting the days until the holidays begin. The excitement is in the air already. We’re listening to holiday music in the car, making wish lists for Santa, and planning the side dishes that must make an appearance on the Thanksgiving table. And just as the enthusiasm builds, things tend get more stressful.
It’s inevitable… you have a packed schedule, possibly extended family coming to stay, and the expectation to do ALL THE THINGS.
That’s precisely why I have a specific morning routine this time of year. It’s non-negotiable for me during the holiday season. That hour or two of quiet— just me & my coffee–rejuvenates me everyday.
That might sound dramatic, but trust me, it makes a world of difference. I have a whole routine: set my coffee pot to brew Folgers® coffee & add my choice of creamer. I love seasonal flavors, don’t you?
International Delight®Frosted Sugar Cookie Creamer?! For real. The checkout lady gave it a second look and remarked, “I’ll have to get some of this!”. ‘Tis the season.
I pour a cup of warm, freshly brewed coffee and cozy up for an hour of bliss. It’s simply time to myself… can’t we all use more of that?
I believe so!
Here are some tips for making your morning quiet time a reality:
Plan Your Time… work or play, or maybe a combination of both? Do you want to use the time to get a jump-start on household tasks, returning emails, or prepping meals for the day? Maybe an hour with a good book & a cup of warm Folgers® coffee sounds ideal to you. Decide how you can make the most of your precious time.
Tell the Family… let your family in on your plan, especially if you have little ones. Most likely, the household will still be asleep, but otherwise, your significant other can support you by helping to enforce this new schedule.
Expectations for the Kids… be clear about what you want the kids to do if they wake up earlier than usual. If they are old enough to stay in their rooms by themselves, you can ask them to play quietly until a certain time on the clock.
Aim for an Early Bedtime… it’s hard to enjoy quiet time in the morning when you’re too exhausted to function. Getting to bed just a little bit earlier can help you to feel more energized in the morning. Trust me, it’s worth it.
Make it Fancy… really make it special for you. This is your time!
I think it’s so fun to add whipped cream and warm spices. It makes the whole experience feel like an event.
Experiment with Quiet Time… if you’re not a morning person, or for some reason, mornings are super busy in your house, try for quiet times throughout the day. Just ten minutes to yourself can totally refresh you. (not to mention, provide a little boost if you have coffee!)
I hope this inspires you to take a little time for yourself this holiday season!
