A sweet & spicy cocktail!
One of the most fun aspects of being a blogger is meeting the people who read your blog, either online or in real life. Establishing a blog can be a slow process, and often (for sure in my case) bloggers can post for months or years before gaining momentum or connecting with readers. You see the numbers and know that people are reading, and kind of think, who’s out there??
As it turns out, my friend Christine from high school! In the ten+ years since graduating from Glenbard West High School in IL, she had moved to Portland (one of my favorite cities!) and started a company bottling and selling her husband’s popular hot sauce recipe. She knew from reading my blog that I am clearly a fan of hot sauce in all things, and offered to send some Hotmaple hot sauce my way. UM, yes!!
She sent me the sweetest note and a few recipes, one of which jumped out at me immediately– The Stumptown Smash, a special cocktail created by Bulleit Bourbon for Hotmaple Foods. I love the idea of using hot sauce in unexpected ways, like beverages. And my husband is a brandy aficionado. So, no brainer. It’s cocktail time!
The combo of maple syrup and hot sauce is genius. Sweet & spicy! I love that this drink adds even more maple syrup, plus tons of fresh citrus. Nothing beats bright, sunny citrus flavors in the middle of winter.
First, muddle the mint, lemon, lime, and all other ingredients (except for bourbon) in a cocktail shaker.
Then, add the bourbon + ice and shake until the container gets chilly. Time to pour!
So refreshing, yet warms you up like bourbon tends to do! I love that the hot sauce adds so much flavor to the drink, it’s like all those seasonings in one spoonful. Delish!
This cocktail got two thumbs up in my house! My grandfather used to (heck still does) declare, “That’ll put hair on your chest!” which describes this drink perfectly. I almost died when I saw the exact phrase on the original recipe page for The Stumptown Smash. In reality, no hair, just one spicy cocktail. Promise.
Can’t wait to try out the other Hotmaple recipes… like the Spicy Tomato Soup. Mhmmmmm…..
In the meantime, drink up!
