I’ve done a lot of “Birchbox vs. Ipsy vs. Glossybox” google searching lately.
Birchbox- monthly delivery of beauty samples focused on skincare, $10/month
Ipsy- formerly Glam Bag, beauty samples focused on make-up, $10/month
Glossybox- promises full-size products, $20/month
If you want more details, feel free to visit the websites, but I’m guessing you’re all at least a bit familiar with them already.
A couple of years ago, I had both Birchbox and Glam Bag. I wasn’t impressed with either.
Glam Bag- now Ipsy- comes with a small make-up bag each time. And while I understand the idea behind that promotion, the bags were not my style, and most of the time ended up in my daughter’s room. I’d rather they spend the money on beauty products, because really, how many small make-up bags does one person need? Plus the products seemed cheap/ too young for me. Lots of glitter.
And Birchbox? It never seemed to fit what I was looking for, in general.
But this year, I decided to give it another chance. Birchbox, that is. I noticed I still had some products lingering around from previous boxes, and wanted to discuss the products on this here blog.
And for a while, I was pretty happy. I give credit to that survey you fill out on the Birchbox site. I really took my time with it, and think I got a better fit with my products.
Anyways…. you still with me? If you are, this is what I got this month:
Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint Sunscreen– way too dark for my skin. I have really pale skin, so even with a tan, “works with most skin tones” doesn’t usually fit my skin tone. I used it on my arms, but that seems kind of like a waste.
Instain Blush– probably the best item in the box. No, definitely. Good color, long-lasting.
Dr. Jart Ceramidin Cream– a nice product, but boring. I’m not going to spend gobs of money on moisturizer (there are too many more practical versions that work), so I probably won’t buy this product.
Beauty Protector Shampoo & Conditioner– no fantastic claims to double the amount of my fine hair, just simple shampoo. It’s definitely nicer than what I use on a daily basis, but nothing too exciting.
In other words, meh.
So I did some googling on the other beauty boxes. The general consensus (from my oh-so-scientific research) is that Birchbox is hit or miss, Ipsy can be good but the make-up tends to be cheaper-looking, and that Glossybox is not always worth the money & has some issues with customer service.
Based on that, I’m sticking with Birchbox for a bit longer. I did get Benefit’s Stay Don’t Stray out of one box, which has been one of my favorite finds recently. Plus, the sample has lasted for months of use. Have you tried it? It’s a fantastic primer for eye make-up, but it also doubles (for me at least) as an on-the-spot concealer. It covers pimples better and stays on longer than the concealer I use for under eye circles.
What do you think about all the boxes? Like one more than the other? Maybe I just hit a bad month….
