So I painted some canvasses this weekend! Not the greatest idea mere days before you have everyone you know over for your daughter’s birthday party. Nonetheless, I’m glad I finally did it.
I’ve been eyeing this tutorial for a while now. Love the blue tones. You should stick around and check out more of her projects. Alyssa is hilarious and she has fantastically thrifty DIY ideas. Not a big DIYer? At least read her “How to Sell Stuff on Craigslist Without Getting Murdered” post. You won’t regret it. Just make sure you’re not drinking any liquids at the same time.
We moved into our house a year ago, and still haven’t really finished decorating the living room. My daughter’s room got the most attention, and we totally ripped out a bathroom. But, we kinda ran out of energy & renovation money by the time we started working on the main room of our house. Knowing people were coming over, I decided to tackle one project that would add a little sumpin-sumpin to the decor.
The colors in our living room are neutrals, with some pops of dark red.

See, very neutral. Needs some more decorations. Maybe Definitely a throw rug.
I used three 20 x 24″ canvasses. Student-grade (cheapest ones) at Michael’s. Slapped some Molding Paste with a putty knife to give them the textured look. Easy.
|Gorgeous drop cloth, right? We WORK around here.|
I choose about 10 shades of craft paint- brown, gold, bronze & white. I tried to stay within the gold/bronzy families, choosing metallic paints, as opposed to flat ones.
Halfway through the job–
This was when I realized it was going to take several coats. And each coat needs to dry. Settled in folks. Turn on some new age music, pretend you’re a real artist. That’s how I coped.
And in their place of honor-
My favorite view is when the sun hits it at an angle, and it just GLOWS.
Thanks Alyssa for the awesome tutorial!
Now to go look at rugs…
