If you buy this bookcase…
Plus some comfy cushions….
You get a kid-friendly storage system that goes perfectly in a nursery or big kid’s playroom. I’ve also seen my daughter pull off one of the cushions to use the top as a flat surface for coloring. Bookcase, chair, desk…very cool.
I highly recommend this Ikea bookcase. It was easy to put together (really), can handle being a seat for adults– though don’t quote me on that– and its material (plastic? plastic-coated wood?) is pretty indestructible. I just peeled a dozen stickers cleanly off of it, and I would imagine markers & crayons wipe off just as easily.
The cushions were a trickier purchase. “Seat” cushions don’t really come in this length (72 7/8″) After searching and searching for the right size cushion, it finally hit me that I could just buy two in a smaller size.
I ended up getting these cushions (from JCPenney, no longer online), which were a bit pricier, but had the no-slip underside, which is really nice. The bookcase is slippery (remember, plastic wood) so the cushions make it safer for kids to sit securely. I went with sage green, and I was little worried about the microsuede, but the couple of minor stains it’s suffered rubbed right out.
In a couple of decades, our kids are going to look back and ask why we kept putting baskets in bookcases. “Well honey, there was this thing called Pinterest…”
